For this project, my objective was to create a book cover design that would modernize a classic. I chose Paradise Lost because the current covers are quite bland and rely heavily on imagery rather than type. To keep the focus on type, I created my own letters by hand using a vibrant neon green acrylic paint.

An element I chose to carry over from current covers is the use of classic artwork. For the background, I applied a duotone mask to illustrations by Gustave Doré from an illustrated version of Paradise Lost published in 1866. The illustrations are etchings that have a really rich texture that gives the background a lot of visual interest.

The project included a book jacket, bookmark, and poster.
